Overwhelmed, chaotic, out of control somewhere, everywhere?
Individual Psychotherapy in a DBT Program provides the place to get validation and to solve problems in a supportive environment.
The individual therapist helps you improve your ability to solve problems, and to understand how these problems are arising. How do they happen? What is the trigger? What are the subsequent thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Your therapist will often help you as a coach: What needs to be different? What works and what is not working. And, how can we get these new behaviors trained and functioning in the real world.
The relationship is collaborative, honest and well observed. We are not upset with people for having the problems that bring them to therapy. And, sometimes the very problems that one is having in regular life occur in the therapy and in the relationship. The opportunity and the environment in which to look at these experiences without negative judgment and with a practical approach to what works makes the relationship an incredibly important part of the therapy.
The first goal of treatment is to address any behaviors which could threaten life. The second goal is to address behaviors which might be getting in the way of therapist and client being enthusiastic about the relationship and the therapy! The third goal is to address behaviors that interfere with the quality of one’s life, one’s work and relationships. The fourth is the ongoing building of skillfulness in all areas that are needed.
