DBT Skillz for Therapists: Interpersonal Effectiveness & Mindfulness

Next Module on Interpersonal Effectiveness and Mindfulness to begin October, 2016.

The 8 session course typically meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, 9-10:45am in Chapel Hill. 

*Distress Tolerance and Emotion Regulation skills will follow in February and June 2017.

 

Learning Objectives for the Interpersonal Effectiveness Module:

  • Understand and practice the skills of Mindfulness of relationship.

  • Understand the concepts of Interpersonal Effectiveness and the the three goals of the Interpersonal Effectiveness skills module in personally meaningful ways. These goals are to be more skillful in getting what we want and need, to build relationships and end destructive ones, to walk the middle path of greater balance in relationships.

  • Experientially apply the priorities of Interpersonal Effectiveness, DEAR MAN, GIVE and FAST, Troubleshooting and Mindfulness of Relationship, including the effective method of Validation.

  • Identify creative ways to teach these skills with clients with the Four Steps of: Link to goal, Shaping step, Essence, Make it SticKy.

Cost: The fee for participating in the DBT Skills for Therapists 8 week course is $420 if paid by the second session. Otherwise, the fee is $60 per session for a total of $480. This class is suitable for many continuing education requirements; it is Level B for psychologists.

DBT Foundational Training - September in Durham with Lorie Ritschel & Clive Robins

We are excited to announce a new training opportunity for mental health clinicians – the Dialectical Behavior Therapy FoundationalTraining-TM. This training will be offered through Behavioral Tech, which was founded by Dr. Marsha Linehan to offer premier DBT training.

Supported by a DBT mentor from their clinical team, participants complete five days of in-person training that covers the core principles and strategies of DBT. Learning is continued in your practice setting with homework and guidance from your DBT mentor. Continuing education (33 hours) is available for most disciplines.

Note from BTech: Members of TADBiT monthly Training-Consult Teams are eligible if an intensively trained clinician signs off as the mentor.

Description:  In this workshop, Drs. Golden and Gadol will present the foundational knowledge and skills of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Clients with borderline personality disorder have been known as a challenging population among mental health professionals for decades, and DBT was developed to treat this population. Since this beginning, DBT has been successfully delivered to many other populations, and more clients are benefiting from DBT treatment. Drs. Golden and Gadol will cover the empirical support for the DBT and the core principles of DBT treatment, covering the theoretical understandings of borderline personality disorder, the assumptions and agreements about therapy in DBT, the structure of DBT treatment, and the skills that clients learn in DBT. Participants will learn through a combination of didactic material, role plays, and experiential activities.

New Skills Group for Substance Abuse

Beverly Johnson and Beth Flack will be leading DBT Skills Group for Substance Abuse will utilize the 2nd Edition of the Linehan DBT Skills Training Manual which includes handouts specifically addressing substance abuse.  Based on the research by Marsha Linehan and Linda Dimeff, DBT includes skills that can be useful in reducing substance abuse and maintaining abstinence. 

Beverly Johnson is a Licensed Professional Counselor who is experienced in working with the dual diagnosis population. Beth Flack is a Licensed Psychological Associate and Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist who is experienced in working with the dual diagnosis population. Both Beverly and Beth participate in a TADBiT DBT Team and the TADBiT Therapist Directory.

This four hour workshop aims to provide you with essential DBT skills that you can immediately apply to your particular needs. While not covering the material of the 12 week Family Skills Training, these four hours will be a substantial introduction to skills that can help break the perpetual negative feedback loop that prompts criticism, self-blame, or defensiveness in our intimate relationships. 

Each member will receive handouts. I will be sending participants some materials in advance to prepare for effective use of this workshop with your unique issues or patterns.  Cost for this half-day workshop is $100 per person and $150 per couple. Sliding scale is available (I do not want finances to prevent any interested family members from participating).

New Skills Group in Durham

Tyler Beach and Martha Golden will be starting a new adult DBT group that will meet in Durham on Mondays, 12.30pm to 2pm. The fee is $75 per session.

Intro to DBT with Meggan Moorhead

Meggan Moorhead will be offering this Introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy in 8 sessions over 4 months. This will be a great opportunity to work with Meggan who is one of the foremost trainers in the country and just happens to live here in the Triangle. The experiential format provides ample demonstration, role-play and video to deepen the learning process.

Description: In this workshop, Meggan Moorhead will present cutting-edge research on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and its application in the area of emotion dysregulation. This includes evidence-based strategies for working with shame as well as theory on emotions involved in emotional suffering. She will discuss neurobiological findings in understanding the emotional arousal system in individuals with borderline personality disorder as well as the research in the area of mindfulness practices.  She will also share the latest changes and offerings in Triangle Area DBT (TADBiT) as well as closely affiliated local programs.

TADBiT 2014 Two-Day Workshop

TADBiT is excited to announce that we will be presenting this year's Two-Day Workshop on DBT on June 6 & 7, 2014! This workshop will be taught by Jill Compton, PhD, and Eric Gadol, PhD, and it will cover the fundamentals of DBT, including the research behind DBT, the causes of emotional dysregulation, and DBT treatment planning. The workshop will be worth 12 hours of CEU through the NCPA, meeting from 9am to 4:30pm each day. Please arrive early for check-in each day.

2.    This foundational two-day workshop is appropriate for any mental health provider who wants an introduction to DBT or a review of DBT fundamentals. Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, psychiatric nurses, and other mental health providers are appropriate participants.

3.    The workshop will take place on June 6 and 7, 9am – 4:30pm, and will consist of interactive lectures, mindfulness exercises, and discussions. Lunch will be on your own from noon to 1pm.

4.    The cost of the workshop is $350 for practitioners in private and hospital settings, $250 for practitioners in the public sector, and $150 for students. Any practitioner requiring a certificate of attendance must also pay NCPA’s processing fee of $10.

5.    About the presenters:

a.    Jill S. Compton, PhD, Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Compton received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998 and served as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke from 1998-2012. She has extensive experience training and practicing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with adolescents and adults with emotion dysregulation, suicidal behavior, and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Dr. Compton has a full-time private clinical practice at the CBT Center of the Triangle and continues to serve as a consulting faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke.

b.    Eric N. Gadol, PhD, Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Gadol earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008 and entered private practice. He completed the Behavioral Tech Intensive Training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy in 2011. In addition to seeing clients in his solo private practice in Durham, Dr. Gadol provides training in DBT and co-leads a consultation/training team.

6.    This CE course will provide 12 hours of credit. To receive credit, you must be present for the entire institute, and you must sign the sign-in and sign-out sheets. No credit will be given to participants who are more than 15 minutes late at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. No credit will be given to participants who leave before the end of the course.
